Field Trip

We've really enjoyed our science this past year....it's called "Christian Kids Explore Biology", and are also using some of "Real Science 4 Kids". But the best part is we study science with another family on a weekly basis, so we share the teaching and go on fun field trips together. Today, we went to a Nature Center, and studied Pond Ecology. With the leadership of the Nature Center, the kids studied turtles and frogs, and also tested the health of the pond water for nitrates, PH levels, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. Wow...lots of new stuff, but all hands on, which the kids loved. The kids also got to dress in waders (big waterproof overalls with boots attached), and bring up critters and pond life to look at. We found lots of plants, some fish, and even a shrimp. Did you know there are pond shrimp? Lastly, we studied the pond water under a microscope, with each child using his own microscope. What great experiences for them, and I even learned something!

My son asked us all to share the best parts of our day. I was thinking he would say microscopes and wading in the pond, or possibly climbing the tree. Nope.....he said "The best part of the whole day was that I met a new friend named Daniel". How great he would choose friendship as the best part of his day. It was a worthwhile field trip, for sure.
